Herbs and Roses as Companions

Marie writes: “Thank you so much for all the newsletters, I enjoy them thoroughly. Please help, what herb can I plant with my Standard roses to keep insects away?

There are quite a few herbs that are effective for keeping insects away, but not all of them prefer the same growing conditions as roses.

A very old piece of gardening lore advises planting garlic with your roses. Other plants that work well are garlic chives, chives, nasturtiums, spearmint, southernwood and parsley.

Do you know of any other plants that are good companions for roses?
