Sheila, one of my Timeless Herb Secrets readers, asks what's the ideal size for a herb garden for her family of four.
Here's my reply:
Sheila, don’t get too carried away with your new venture at the start. Rather work on something you can achieve in terms of your enthusiasm, space, time, energy and money. This is such a common mistake that I’ve included it as the first tip in my 11 Insider Tips to Improve Your Herb Gardening Success.
It all boils down to just one single variable. The size of your herb garden.
Yes, size matters…
A successful sustainable herb garden won’t consume more than its fair share of resources. If it does it is simply not sustainable.
As a rough guide. Start small – less than 3 square meters – and limit yourself to less than 12 different herbs.
Expand as your confidence and experience grows. An average size herb garden for a family of four is 9 square meters. Including the paths, etc.
For example: Our household garden is approximately 7 square meters bed space and it produces a whole lot more than our family of four can consume. And believe me when I say that we do use a lot of herbs on a daily basis.
